The Loudness War

A strange thing has been happening to recorded music over the last 10 or so years – it has been getting steadily louder. Or more accurately it has been getting less dynamic. In a race to dominate the airwaves, tracks have been increasingly compressed to bring up the perceived overall volume. If your song is louder, people prick their ears up and might take notice.

Today, artists generally feel they have to master their records to be as loud as everybody else’s. This certainly works for many artists. However, there are many other artists who feel their music would be better served by a more dynamic record, but who don’t feel like that option is available to them.

Have a look at this great website that is trying to buck this trend.
